Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a retinal problem that affects human central vision and is the main cause of legal blindness in industrialized countries. AMD is characterized by the accumulation and gradual degradation of retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) and photoreceptors, as well as exogenous deposits, namely subretinal spots. AMD is a multifactorial disease, which involves the complex interaction among genetic, environmental, metabolic and immune factors.

At present, the treatment of AMD is limited, especially atrophic or "dry" AMD, which accounts for about 80% of all AMD patients. In order to develop new therapeutic strategies, it is necessary to establish an effective animal model to simulate the pathogenesis and clinical manifestations of human AMD. Non-human primate (NHP) is considered as the most suitable animal model for AMD research because of its high similarity with human in anatomy, physiology, immunity and heredity.

Prisys Biotechnology is an innovative non-human primate (NHP) research and service company, with a comprehensive platform of NHP resources and preclinical pharmacology, providing professional research on new drug development and disease-related technologies for the global pharmaceutical and biomedical industries, including immunology, inflammation, cardiovascular diseases, hematology, liver, kidney, lung and tumor.

Prisys Biotechnologies provides an AMD model based on NHP, which can induce retinal pigment epithelial cell damage by injecting laser or dye, and produce clinical manifestations similar to human AMD, such as subretinal plaque, degeneration or atrophy of pigment epithelial cells and retinal nerve degeneration. The model can be used to evaluate the influence of new drug candidates on various molecular pathways or cell types in the progress or recovery of AMD, and provide the end point that can be transformed with humans.
